Summary:

Run for your life…

Sixteen-year-old Claire McBride just witnessed a brutal murder at the hands of someone she knew, someone she thought she could trust. Now she’s alone, afraid and desperate to put as many miles as possible between herself and the killer. Seeing no other options, she flees her home town of Galena, leaving behind everything and everyone she’s ever held dear.

Run for your life…

Carter Emerson’s whole world has come crashing down around him. He woke to the news his best friend, Claire has gone missing without a trace, and there’s nothing he can do about it. Finding out her car was abandoned in the busy city of Chicago, he and his brother can’t help but fear the worst… With no solid suspects or leads, it looks like Carter’s worst nightmare could come true, and Claire’s disappearance may turn into a cold case.

Run for your life…

With the killer at her heels, Claire has no choice but to leave Carter in the dark. She can’t risk his safety just because she misses the sound of his voice… But will the run of Claire’s life be worth it in the end? Or will her past catch up with her no matter how hard she tries to escape it?

What I liked: I love how Carter tries his best to find Claire after she leaves town. The friendship between those two is told very easily by how they act to each other and the lengths that Claire goes to protect Carter and Carter goes to bring her home. Claire ran for a good reason, to protect people but I think in a way she could have gone about it differently to try and protect everyone rather than running away, but her heart was in the right place. The dual POV aspect to the story works in favor of it because it shows both sides to the story and at the same times leaves you guessing what’s going to happen next.

What I didn’t like: The beginning, while good, was a little abrupt since I didn’t really get to see Claire in her normal life before she runs away. Seeing her normal routine would have helped me get to know her as a character better I think.

Overall Review: Fast paced with a great storyline I found this book to be a very enjoyable read that I read in a single sitting because it kept my attention as I tried to figure out what happens next. While the ending is a bit sudden in a way it helps set up the premise of the future books in the Gumshoes & Grifters series.

Recommend?: I really would! If you’re a fan of these genres of books I suggest you at least check the books out and decided for yourself!

The Soundtrack to the Book

These are songs we think fit the themes and feel of The Escape.

This especially fits Chapter 1 when Claire sees what Liam is up to

My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark by Fall Out Boy

This applies to Claire a lot throughout the entirety of the book, she is constantly just trying to survive, really.

Carry On by Fun.

This is how Carter is feeling when he finds out Claire is gone.

Running Up That Hill by Placebo

Chapter 12 is really where this fits the best, in our opinion.

So Far Away by Mary Lambert

Carrie Underwood is Claire’s favorite singer and this is pretty much her song to Liam throughout the book.

Undo It by Carrie Underwood

Chapter 11 when Carter finally hears from Claire.

Stay by Florida Georgia Line
